Modern Times

Charlie Chaplin and Paulette Goddard in Modern Times.

Modern Times – It’s also called Charlie Chaplin’s last “silent” film. Since I was raised a Charlie Chaplin fan and have seen this is a movie many times, I can tell you that it never looses its poignancy. The social theme of man struggling to survive in the modern, industrialized world, will never be outdated. Humanity will always be on the pursuit of happiness, no matter how many times the Earth has rotated. As we all head towards an uncertain but hopeful future, I recommend that you watch this timeless classic and have a good laugh.

It’s amazing what can be conveyed with wordless messages. Charlie Chaplin was a master at nonverbal communication. Old slapstick was great, but more modern actors like Jim Carrey are ruining the style. Thank goodness for actors like Rowan Atkinson who understands how the visual style is supposed to work. Otherwise I would have said good slapstick died with the Three Stooges.
