A Christmas Story

Hey Ralphie, is it time for A Christmas Story yet?

One of the most silliest holiday television treats is almost here - A Christmas Story. Ralphie has to convince his folks, teachers, and Santa that a Red Ryder BB gun really is the perfect gift for the 1940’s. If you’ve somehow missed this holiday classic - you must watch it! Some of you are probably like me and have watched it at least 100 times and can recite each line. Thankfully TBS can help. You can catch 24 hours of this super movie, starting Christmas Eve at 8/7c! You can also just buy the DVD and watch it whenever you want.

Have you seen the cellphone commercial spoof yet? How about this Christmas Story Wii parody? They’re great! Do you know of any others?

Holiday Gift Guide 2006

Old Man Musings Holiday Gift Guide 2006 - Retro Toys

If you’re like me, you need all the help you can get when shopping for the holidays. So I’ve created a handy list of some of the most popular toys which have endured the test of time. These toys will promote creativity and imagination as they educate and entertain - plus they don’t cost much. Do you remember playing with these toys when you were younger?

Toys from the 1900-1920s:

  • If there’s snow to be enjoyed, swoosh down the hill with a Flexible Flyer sled.
  • Lincoln Logs appeared in 1924, just as parents were realizing the benefits of construction toys.

1930-1940s:

  • View-Master first appeared at the 1939 New York World’s Fair.
  • It’s Slinky for fun it’s a wonderful toy. It’s Slinky, it’s Slinky, it’s fun for a girl and a boy.
  • Be first to finish your Cootie to win - just don’t loose the pieces.

1950s:

  • The original Magic 8 Ball has all the answers you need.
  • Silly Putty with its classic egg-shaped container, has attracted many kids over the years.
  • Sea Monkeys are a true miracle of nature. Just how do they do it?

1960-1970s:

  • What kid hasn’t enjoyed a Big Wheel downhill race? Zooooooom!
  • Kerplunk - Don’t let the marbles fall! A game of skill and luck.
  • The Uno card game is fun for the whole family.

1980-1990s:

  • Can you solve the mechanical puzzle known as the Rubik’s Cube?
  • Jenga!!! is a game of physical and mental skill.

If you have your gifts shipped, it’ll provide even more fun. Just give a child a cardboard box and let their imagination run wild!

I hope you’ve found this list helpful and continue to enjoy this site. Thanks!

DIY Action Figure

Vicale offers a DIY action-figure toolkit.

Make your own action figure using the Flash application, puts you in control. Choose from different heads, clothes, weapons and such. With all the clothes and accessories, I’d have thought it was a Barbie, but it’s still fun and my urban action figure looks cool. He looks a bit like a hip-hop Ab Lincoln.

Unazukin

Unazukin quietly listen to your story, with nodding or shaking of her head.

These colorful, little Unazukin toys from Japan, are obviously made to charm your socks off. They’re voice activated and actually react to your voice by nodding and shaking their head. There are several different types to choose from and all of them are excessively cute. You’ll eventually succumb to their endearing charm and allow them to make all of your decisions for you.

Me: Should I buy everyone on my X-mas list a Unazukin?
Unazukin: {Nodds approvingly}
Me: Ok, but what about the gifts I’ve already bought? Should I just throw that stuff away?
Unazukin: {Nodds approvingly}
Me: Sure thing! Isn’t it weird that I’m talking to a toy?
Unazukin: {Shakes her head disapprovingly}
Me: That’s cool, I didn’t think so. Have you seen where my socks went?

Mission in Snowdriftland

UPIXO in Action: Mission in Snowdriftland. Chubby Snows big ADVENTure.

Mission in Snowdriftland is a 2D side-scrolling platform Flash game, where you’re Chubby (the snowman) and you must retrieve the Nintendo game files that were stolen by the evil penguin El Pix. The game has superb graphics, a well-written plot and a sweet soundtrack. It’s so well done, probably because it’s an advergame “powered by Nintendo”. The gameplay reminds me of Super Mario World a bit. A new level every day from the 1st until the 24th of December. Go play and have fun with this in-depth, graphically pleasing, and all around fun game - then come back and play some more later.

Holiday Party Excuse Generator

The Holiday Party Excuse Generator can help.

Have a holiday party that you’d like to skip, but don’t have an excuse? The Holiday Party Excuse Generator can help. The silly animated snowman will guide you through the step-by-step process. Just make your choices and a personalized excuse letter is generated for you. Humorous and helpful. Use the letter at your own risk.

Example resulting letter:

I am happy to say that I will be unable to attend your snooze fest that tries, but never quite manages, to become a celebration. I will be out caroling for charity — something I do every year, and thus at a safe distance from your plastic smile and your unnaturally white teeth. Once the holidays are past, I hope to have a good long visit with you and find out all the party highlights. Please give my condolences to your party guests, and tell them I have been in their shoes — and it’s hideous. My best wishes for a dingy and caloric holiday.

Scared of Santa

Nothing says Happy Holidays like a photo of sweet little toddlers screaming at Santa.

Who hasn’t seen a kid that was scared of Santa? Perhaps in your younger years you were the one screaming when placed in the lap of the bearded, plump stranger called Santa. Check out this collection of photos showing kids in different stages of fright while in the vicinity of Santa. Why some kids scream and others don’t, I don’t know. Perhaps some kids are more easily freaked out than others?

I don’t think my folks ever did this to me, that I can remember…

Santa’s Butt

Santa's Butt label was painted by Massachusetts artist Gary Lippincott.

Around the holidays everyone wants a piece of Santa. But in some recent news it seems a beer brewer was thrown on it’s backside for creating a beer with some contention. The Shelton Brothers are no strangers to controversy and they seem to like the continued attention. Just last year they had problems with its “Seriously Bad Elf” ale. “Santa’s Butt” beer was inspired by this famous line from a well-loved children’s story book:

And Santa sat on his great butt, drinking a hearty brew.

As silly as it sounds, and it does sound silly, a butt can also refer to a large 126 gallons (about 477 liters) cask. That’s a whole lot of beer to drink standing up.

Update: As of Jan 5 2007, it seems that Santa’s Butt is fine!

Little Gamers

Webcomic about a boy who is into gaming and his friends.

Little Gamers is an entertaining webcomic created by Christian Fundin and Pontus Madsen. The characters in this cute webcomic are brazen but humorous and are big into video games like Final Fantasy. The creators have been doing the strip for six years now and they just published their third book. Enjoy their (almost) daily antics and be sure to read through their vast archive of comics for a good laugh.

Perhaps I’ll see them at the 2007 San Diego Comic-Con, if they go again.
