Lost In Translation - Uncle Gene’s Donuts

Uncle Gene's Donuts and that clean mouth feel

While in Hong Kong, I took this photo because the sign really caught my eye. Enjoy the “clean mouth feel” and the taste of America -with 0 milligrams of total carbonhydrates! Now I know they probably meant carbohydrates, but it still doesn’t make sense since the average donut is almost all carbohydrates. So perhaps to follow the low-carb fad, they came up with the 0% carbonhydrates marketing campaign. (You know, truth in advertising.) It’s all in how you market and sell your product!

Now I leave you with some questions (and I invite you to comment):

  • What does your country taste like?
  • What are carbonhydrates and should donuts be made of them?
  • What is a clean mouth feel to you?

What does your country taste like?
-individuals.

What are carbonhydrates and should donuts be made of them?
-carbonhyrate, the friendly carbohydrate; atkin’s approved… nothing much different than what’s in ordinary food these days?

What is a clean mouth feel to you?
-the smoothness of that port i had last weekend.

1) Last week’s sweaty gym sock coated in sugar.

2) Doughnuts can be made of anything as long as they still taste good.

3) After gargling for 30 seconds with approx a capful of original Listerine.

Uncle Gene’s Donuts…

I’m glad we not the only ones who were amused by Uncle Gene’s Donuts in Hong Kong. Their differentiator seems to be “American”-style donuts although what they serve is a mini-donuts and a variety of dipping sauces, such as chocolate syrup. It was funny to see your own culture misinterpreted and productized in another context. Complete with cartoon mascots aplenty!
