If you’ve not heard or seen in the news recently our favorite little portable game system has sold a whole lot. This news should come as no surprise since Nintendo has controlled the handheld market for over a decade.

Nintendo Europe’s press office said a figure of 10 million that was reported Tuesday and appeared on the company’s Web site was incorrect. However, a spokeswoman said she could not explain the source of that figure.

A company statement Thursday said that “approximately 13 million Nintendo DS are now in the hands of people all around the world.”

As mentioned last week the dual-screened Nintendo DS was the fastest-selling video game machine ever in Japan, where more than 5 million units were snapped up by consumers since its launch there in early December 2004.

Some of the most popular titles were Nintendogs, Mario Kart DS and Super Mario 64 DS.
