Why are they first?
In the movie Lonely Guy, Steve Martin’s character is running all over town trying to stop the marriage of a woman, he loves, to another man. He runs into a church and brought the ceremony to a halt, only to realize that it wasn’t the correct wedding party. He asked a man in the back row “Is this First Lutheran?” and the man replies, “No, Third Methodist”.
I’ve always wondered why some churches and banks have the word first in them. Generally it is better to be first and historically those who aren’t first usually aren’t remembered as well. First is definitely more popular, but is it necessary? If you had a choice between going to a First or Second bank or church, which would you choose? I wonder if those not in the “first” group get picked on by those in the “first” group?
